This latest exhibition by artist couple Merja Puustinen and Andy Best presents works that deal with themes related to recent and ongoing political and social struggles. As usual, Best and Puustinen’s works at first appear playful and appealing, but under the surface lurks something darker and more sinister. The soft sculpture Bird of Prey is a scale model of the stealth Black Hawk helicopter used by US special forces in the assassination of Osama Bin Laden. The design itself is shielded in mystery as no official details are released to the public. This messenger of death lies powerless and crumpled on the gallery floor. The photographs and neon lights making up the installation Day to Day present the words describing the seven deadly sins together with absurd images portraying the essence of daily life. The physical juxtaposition of the words and photographs in the gallery space forces the viewer to literally negotiate and encounter their own perspectives and emotions.
