Description of activity
Johanna Lehtinen-Schnabel (MMus) is a doctoral researcher at the University of Arts Helsinki, MuTri doctoral School, Research Unit (Music Education). She is an experienced choir conductor, music educator and musician who has a post as a leading music teacher (Head of Music Department) at the second biggest Adult Education Centre in Finland. Her research interests that stem from her multiple teaching experiences are linguistically and culturally diverse music education contexts, language-aware choir practices, and the opportunities of musical activity to second language (L2) learning, among others. In her doctoral research she explores linguistically and culturally diverse choirs in which the active use second language (L2) is intertwined with holistic and collaborative musical activity. Johanna Lehtinen-Schnabel is a member of an interdisciplinary research project ELLA (2021-2024), funded by Kone foundation and coordinated by the University of the Arts Helsinki, that investigates how embodied language learning through the arts may generate substantial change within communities.
